What is a Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU)

Established in 1974 by Mayor Maynard H. Jackson, the NPU enables citizens to comment, express ideas and get information concerning all functions of Atlanta City government.  The NPU, a citizen advisory council, makes recommendations to the Mayor and City Council on issues including zoning, land use and future planning.

Cascade-Campbellton Redevelopment

The City of Atlanta has an ambitious redevelopment plan for the Campbellton and Cascade corridors that flank NPU-S. This is a fairly detailed plan, but it boils down "the transformation of both corridors from automobile-oriented corridors with isolated land uses into vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use neighborhoods".  The NPU has postponed voting on these plans until all the affected parties can be informed and folks can read the plans for themselves.

The plans and assorted supporting documents can be found here.  The city's explanation can be found here. We encourage all citizens of the NPU to look over the plans and come to the vote in October's NPU-S meeting.

Fight Scrap Tire Dumping

Tire dumping is rampant in our neighborhood, and the City has established a commission to clean it up. Dumped tires are not only an eyesore and environmentally damaging - they also serve as prime breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes. If you know of a location where tires are being dumped, please follow this link [PDF] to report it and get those tires removed!

Coming up for Earth Day

Got an old monitor, a VCR that's gathering dust, some paint left over from repainting a room? Saturday the 23d of April - Earth Day weekend - there will be a collection of old latex paint and electronic equipment for proper disposal and recycling. Take those old electronic gadgets over to the Gold parking lot of Turner Field, from 9am to 1pm.

This is electronic and paint pickup only - no trash, and some items such as refrigerators will not be accepted. For more details, check with livethrive.
