Atlanta Cemetery Network Meeting - June 14, 2022

From the Department of City Planning:

As you know, cemeteries play a significant role in telling the story of Atlanta's many vibrant communities and places. They reflect demographic, economic, and religious trends in ways that buildings and other properties may not. Sometimes, cemeteries are the last remaining reminder of a neighborhood or group of people— in short—they are a vital and invaluable link to our past.

Last year, the City of Atlanta's Department of City Planning recognized the important role cemeteries play in Atlanta via a recommendation in the "Future Places Project", the City's first comprehensive assessment of its historic preservation program in over 30 years. This recommendation has led to the City of Atlanta establishing the "Atlanta Cemetery Network" to advance the discussion about cemeteries in the city.

On February 24, the City of Atlanta and our partners launched the Atlanta Cemetery Network. As part of the City's celebration of Preservation Month the Atlanta Cemetery Network would like to invite you to join us for an update on the progress made in the past three months by our newly formed Steering Committee and to outline our goals for the remainder of 2022.

We will also be hosting Keith Harper, The Cemetery Detective for a talk where he will share thoughts on the importance of cemeteries, how he researches and finds cemeteries, as well as stories from some of his favorite cemeteries just to our north, in his hometown of Chattanooga, TN.

Please join us for our first in-person meeting of the Atlanta Cemetery Network on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 2295 Benjamin E Mays Dr SW, Atlanta, GA 30311.
