GDOT Answers to NPU Questions

From Stacy Evans, our State Representative:
Below are responses to two questions I posed to GDOT that I know are of interest to your NPU. Please let me know if you or anyone has further questions.
  • What is the timing of installing the left turn lane at RDA/Cascade?
    • This project has stalled somewhat as we've had turnover with our signals team. We are still in the design phase, at which point this will need to go through our signal permitting process, and also be bid out for construction. We're probably looking at approximately 6 months.
  • Cascade between the Beautiful and Langhorn is incredibly bumpy – can improvements be made?
    • The section of road described is approximately 2.3 miles long with only 0.1 miles of that distance being on the State route system. This means the overwhelming majority of the road resurfacing would need to be completed by the City of Atlanta. The (short) State route portion should get resurfaced with the road diet project, that is probably about 2 years out.
I've included a snapshot below of a Google Earth at the Langhorn St intersection. The red line designates the State route and shows how it turns to follow the Ralph David Abernathy road name. Cascade is off system, except for the intersection with RDA.

MARTA to Host Campbellton Corridor Virtual Public Meeting on Feb. 3 and Feb. 5

From MARTA:

You are invited to attend a virtual public meeting for the Campbellton Corridor Transit project on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m., or Saturday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. The virtual meetings will provide an opportunity to learn about the proposed high-capacity transit mode that will be presented to the MARTA Board of Directors for approval. It will also be an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments. Go to www.itsmarta.com to access the virtual meetings.

MARTA, in collaboration with the City of Atlanta, is investing in high-capacity transit in the Campbellton Corridor to improve connectivity, accessibility, and mobility in southwest Atlanta. The corridor, which links the Greenbriar Mall area to the Oakland City MARTA Station, is home to established neighborhoods and businesses, and is currently served by one of MARTA's busiest bus routes – 83 Campbellton Road. This historic multimodal investment will greatly enhance the service area and transform how residents travel to points of interests while supporting the community's growth and development for years to come.

We look forward to your participation in the virtual public meetings. Please email publichearinginfo@itsmarta.com or contact MARTA's Customer Call Center at 404-848-5000 with additional questions.

Free Smart Thermostats Giveaway on Feb. 2 at Metropolitan Library

Fulton County and Southface will be hosting another free smart thermostats giveaway event on Feb. 2 from 4pm-6pm at Metropolitan Library - 1332 Metropolitan Pkwy SW, Atlanta, GA 30310. Please see flyer attached for more details and to share with community members. This event is part of ongoing initiatives related to the Metropolitan Library Resilience Hub.

Thermostats are being prioritized for community members residing in one of the following Neighborhood Planning Units (NPU's) experiencing high energy burdens (more than 6% of income spent on energy bills): NPU-X, S, Z, Y, V, T, L, H, and R.

Smart thermostats are an effective measure to improve home efficiency and reduce energy burden. If a household previously received a thermostat from our event on Nov. 17, then they won't be eligible to receive another. In order for the thermostats to work to their full potential, households will need to have WiFi and a common (blue) wire.

2022 Community Impact Grants!

Every year, the City of Atlanta partners with its Neighborhood Planning Units to send out Community Impact Grants (CIGs). These small-dollar grants fund programs to improve the community in four areas:

  • Neighborhood Enhancement projects to enhance the appearance, safety, and livability of the neighborhood’s public spaces - streetscapes, gateways, neighborhood business areas, activation of unused public spaces and so forth.
  • Leadership and Capacity Building projects to improve the organizational capacity of local organizations that serve the public in addressing issues, improving conditions, and enhancing the quality of life within the neighborhood.
  • Community Engagement and Awareness projects to promote a sense of community, raise awareness of the NPU System, increase participation in the civic process, and so forth.
  • Development Assistance projects to encourage productive communication among residents, developers, and other stakeholders during the development review process, including financial assistance for impact studies and third-party consultants

This year NPU-S is working to get the maximum $6,500 in CIG monies to distribute to organizations in the NPU.  If your neighborhood organization or civic group has a project that could use a little seed money, why not put in an application? We strive to make it as easy as possible.

Restrictions and Deadlines

NPU-S must have its grant applications approved by vote and submitted to the City by March 4. Since the last NPU meeting before March 4 is our February 17 meeting, grant applications must be submitted by February 13 for review by the Executive Committee.

This City will not award grants to or for the following:

  • Individuals
  • Capital campaigns
  • Endowment funds for for-profit entities
  • Fundraising events
  • Government agencies or departments
  • Lobbying efforts
  • Political contributions
  • Religious organizations for religious purposes
