Atlanta Public School updates

Information courtesy of Board Member Aretta Baldon

COMPLETE OR UPDATE YOUR INTENT TO RETURN DECLARATION
In preparation for the 4th quarter of the current (2020-2021) school year, families once again have the option to select their preferred instructional model for each student. For 4th quarter, you may choose from the three instructional delivery models currently in use 1) Site Based Virtual Learning, 2) Face to Face and 3) Atlanta Virtual Academy (get the most current information HERE).

As with previous intent to return declaration windows, we're asking parents and guardians to be reflective about their desire to have their child return for face to face instruction. We know that some students have greater need for face to face instruction than others. It is clear that virtual learning has been successful for some while challenging for others. We trust that each parent or guardian will make a decision that best fits the needs of their individual child and the safety of the community.

If you submitted a response during the previous intent-to-return declaration period, you may use this form to update your selection. If you do not complete this form by Monday March 8th, your student(s) will remain in their current instructional learning model. Responses may be changed until the declaration period closes on March 8th.

COVID-19 TESTING AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF
In an effort to mitigate COVID-19 in our schools and community, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) has adopted a Comprehensive COVID-19 Testing Strategy in collaboration with public health officials, community partners, universities, and healthcare organizations.

This strategy works with our school-based APS Care Centers and community resources to provide testing for the following groups:
    • Students, teachers, and staff with symptoms identified through the health screening protocols
    • Students, teachers, and staff who have had contact with someone with COVID-19 in the school or workplace
    • All students, faculty, and staff with possible exposure in the context of outbreak settings
    • PLUS surveillance testing for individuals who are asymptomatic.

MARCH 1ST MONTHLY ATLANTA BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

Citywide Survey on Police Reform and Public Safety

We Want to Hear From You!
If this past year has taught us anything, we still have some work to do as a community. The impact of social unrest due to existing inequalities coupled with a global pandemic and an unconventional election year revealed much about our society that we probably want to forget. The breakdown of the public trust in our police department and the spike in violent crime that many cities have seen across the nation are just a few of those things.
Your Voice Matters!
The City of Atlanta has initiated a citywide effort to understand the issues and perceptions around police reform and public safety because they go hand in hand. The City has partnered with us (press release) to ensure EVERYONE HAS A VOICE AND INPUT in the process. Please take a moment to complete our citywide survey and share this email with your community so they can complete it also.
Your Voice Matters! Share This With Your Community!!
It is important that EVERYONE has an opportunity to be heard and give input on how policing should be handled in our City. One of our first steps is to gather input through this brief citywide survey on police reform and law enforcement. Click below to complete the survey!

The committee will hear from the presenter, Jay Jackson, RYSE Interactive, Inc., www.RYSECreativeVillage.com. RYSE is redeveloping the ols Arkwright Elementary campus, 1261 Lockwood Dr SW and will be seeking to rezone 2 parcels of land.

For the main school building parcel, they are seeking to rezone from R4 (single-family zoning) to MRC-2, Multifamily Residential, Commercial-2, which would allow for the intended use as a training and development incubator for the creative arts industry.
For parcel 2, address 0 Wichita Dr., SW,  they are seeking to rezone from R4 TO RG4, General (multi-family) residential, maximum floor area ratio of 1.49.  Floor area ratio is the number of square feet in a building divided by the square footage of the building lot. The maximum floor area ratio can be exceeded with bonuses in some districts.

Help the police canvas the neighborhood to solve a murder

From Atlanta Police Zone 4:
On February 10, 2021, a 12-year-old David Mack was shot and killed about 100 yards behind 1984 Shirly Street in Utoy Creek. The homicide unit has been actively working leads and crime stoppers calls to get closure for the family in this case. Atlanta Crime Stoppers run by our police foundation has increased the reward amount for information in the case.

On Thursday, February 25, 2021 from 1600hrs to 1730hrs (4pm to 5:30pm) Zone 4 officers and other units will be working with Homicide investigators in the area doing neighborhood canvas. The neighborhood canvas will include giving out information on the crime and who to contact with information. I would like to invite the area community members who would like to help take part in helping to close this case. Basically, all you would be doing is paring up with an officer and or detective and going door to door to speaking with residents. Some residents may not know about this incident and have a small piece of information that could assist the Homicide unit. This will allow community members and the police to team up and work on this case. If you are interested in more information about helping, please feel free to email me at JCantin@atlantaga.gov

Free Ivy Removal (& Volunteer Recruitment) Oakland City/Bush Mtn

English Ivy may look pretty growing up the side of your house or across your yard, but it can quickly take over a landscape; it is a threat to our tree canopy and to the people and houses living under it. Ivy makes it hard for trees to receive the sunlight they need to grow. If left alone, ivy will eventually kill trees, and increase the likelihood they can fall during a storm.

But, there is good news! No need to cut down an otherwise healthy tree.  Ivy is easily removed by cutting away the ivy from the bottom. Over time, the rest of the growth at the top of the tree dies off, and you have healthy tree once again.

If you live in Oakland City or Bush Mountain, Oakland City Community Organization, in cooperation with West End Watershed Alliance and Community Foodscapes, has created a program to remove ivy from trees at your home for free! Sign up here to have up to three trees cleared of ivy.

Removing ivy will extend a tree's life span, beautify our neighborhood's natural landscape, and reduce the risk of a fallen tree on your property.

If you're interested in signing up to volunteer, you can sign up at https://volunteer.handsonatlanta.org/opportunity/a0C1H00001M6f9bUAB

Black History Month Essay and Film Competition

Fulton County District 5 Commissioner Marvin S. Arrington, Jr. is hosting essay and film competitions to celebrate Black History Month. The contest will reward teens and young adults that live in Fulton County. Students participating in the contest are asked to respond to the following prompt: “Why my unsung hero should be celebrated during Black History Month.”

Students are asked to use that request to write an essay or create a video about a 20th-century figure who made a significant contribution to Black progress and American history in the areas of science, government, or education. Essays should be approximately 1500 words in length, 12 point font, and double spaced. Videos should be no more than 10 minutes in length.

The top prize winners in the essay and video categories each will receive a $500 prize, while second and third prize recipients in each category receive $300 and $200 respectively. The competition is sponsored by the Jarvis Hayes Foundation and the Friends of Wolf Creek.

Competition submissions are due by Friday, February 19, 2021, with the winners in the film and essay categories to be announced on Friday, February 26, 2021. Please submit entries to Marvin.Arrington@FultonCountyGA.gov.
